The Suez Canal expansion completed.

According to the Suez Canal Authority, Egypt celebrated the completion of the expansion work on 6th August, 2015. 45 miles of the 120-mile canal was expanded, involving digging and dredging along 23 miles and making a new parallel waterway of 22 miles long to accommodate two-way traffic. The enlargement of the canal will reduce the transit time to 11 hours from the current 18 hours and the waiting time will be reduced to 3 hours from the current 11 hours. Further, the canal now allows passage of larger vessels with up to 66 feet draught.

The EU regulation on monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of CO2 emissions has been adopted on April 28, 2015.

The EU regulation on monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of CO2 emissions has been adopted on April 28, 2015 and will enter into force on July 1, 2015. The regulation, which requires annual reporting of the CO2 emissions in line with a verified monitoring plan, applies to ships exceeding 5,000 GT conducting voyages into, out of and between EU ports. In case of failure to comply with the above requirements for two or more consecutive reporting periods, competent authority of the EU Member State of the port of entry may issue an expulsion order which shall be notified to the Commission, EMSA, the other EU Member States and the flag State concerned. As a result of the issuing of such an expulsion order, every EU Member State shall refuse entry of the ship concerned into any of its ports.

NZ to implement Biofouling Regulations, 2018.

The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has announced that it will implement the Craft Risk Management Standard (CRMS) for Biofouling on Vessels Arriving at New Zealand. This Standard will come into force on 15th May, 2018. The Standard will apply to all types of Sea-Craft that have come from or have recently visited coastal waters of another country.

New rules for SOLAS will come into effect.

SOLAS III/17-1, which was adopted at MSC91, requires PLANS AND PROCEDURES FOR RECOVERY OF PERSONS FROM THE WATER to be kept on board both new ships and existing ships from July 1, 2014 (Ships constructed before July 1, 2014 shall comply with this requirement by first periodical or renewal Safely Equipment survey of the ships to be carried out after July 1, 2014, whichever comes first).

Consultation Draft of New NYPE Form was released from BIMCO.

The Shipping Industry has much changed in the past 20 years since NYPE 1993 was published. The revision of the widely used NYPE 1993 Form, was undertaken jointly by BIMCO, ASBA and SMF. The objective was not only updating the NYPE 1993 Form but also making it more relevant in a global context. A Consultation Draft was approved for publication by BIMCO at the meeting in Dubai last month. The new NYPE will be finalized and published by the end of this year. Read more on the BIMCO website.
